Recent large-scale mixed-media works. 2004 - 2009
These drawings were made during the process of making some of my larger works.
I would describe these as 'early works'.
'A British Artist’s Journal of Post-Tsunami Sri Lanka.' Work Exhibited at Crane Kalman Brighton 26 December 2005 to 22 January 2006. During the summer of 2004, I spent two weeks photographing Sri Lanka. Six months later the world was shaken by the images and press stories of the largest global natural disaster in living memory. The following April, I returned to Sri Lanka to photograph the country and people again, and to meet some of the survivors, not just of the tsunami, but of the devastating recession that had settled over the country due to the lack of tourism since the disaster. Gerard Weber, a Sri Lankan from Negombo, was my tour driver and translator on both trips. The photographs and stories gathered during 7 days in April 2005, combined with observations of the UK media’s response to the tsunami and the flawed aid effort that followed became the basis for my first solo show as an artist. From sales and donations made during my show I managed to raise some money to help some of the people who appear in my work.
These are mainly large-scale drawings (2005 - 2009) See also my 'Drawing Blog', a separate project, which I update every day with a new drawing: www.shadrictoop-drawingblog.co.uk
Etching is a medium which is fairly new to me. I find the process fascinating and addictive.
